Tech-Privacy Workshop

Face Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Wearable Tech, Augmented/Virtual Reality, Behavioural Prediction and Tracking and Med-Tech all offer huge opportunities to change our lives and grow our businesses, but these technologies come with responsibility, and legal obligations.

These small interactive workshops are designed to explore the potential privacy challenges these technologies create, and more importantly, how we can build protections into our systems and processes to protect users and ultimately our business.

These free monthly events are scheduled for the second Thursday of each month and are guided by our attendees, to ensure maximum value to participants as the events grow.

Hosted by Data Compliance Specialists, Brighton's leading Privacy professional focused on the high-tech sector, and by Phil May, an IAPP Certified Privacy Pro and experienced high-tech professional who has worked for numerous software and hardware companies in both the UK and Silicon Valley.

Benefits of attending:

Learn about the legal requirements GDPR and other jurisdictions place on the use of these technologies
Hear from other privacy professionals about the challenges they've faced and how they overcame them
Network with other business leaders facing similar issues
Feel free to contact Phil May (phil@datacompliancespecialists.co.uk) if you have any questions. You can also signup for our free monthly Privacy & Security Awareness Newsletter to be kept updated on all the latest privacy and security news and tips.

See you there!

Make your millions with Laravel (maybe)!

Let's celebrate the height of summer, and the dream of spending the whole day sitting on the deck of your yacht, instead of dashing out to cram a beer and a bite, before rushing back to the office with indigestion and sunburn.

Yes friends, this month is "start-up chat", with a tinge of "could we do that in Laravel?". Bring your ideas, and a positive mental attitude, and we'll discuss them all over a pint, along with some of the practicalities and experiences we've all had in the world of small (and large) software businesses.

All levels welcome from super-pro "I don't work anymore because my Laravel bot makes me a grand an hour" to just interested code-for-fun amateurs.

See you there ( hopefully :0 )

Location: Usual table. Head in, left around the bar, turn left, and we'll be somewhere on the right (weather dependent, I'll try to find an alternative outside venue and update you all nearer the time).

p.s. All topics open for discussion, this is just a guide to get us started.

Brighton Launch Event: Designers on the Terrace

Gathered on the sunny terrace at The Projects, a state-of-the-art co-working space near the sea, we will share some insight for established and aspiring graphic designers on how to get work as a graphic designer in film, TV and live events. And because we’re in the mood to celebrate, the pizza and drinks are on us!

Once everyone is suitably refreshed and acquainted, there will be a short introduction from the owner of Artwork Bazaar, Attila Raczkevy, on what the community and marketplace is all about and how it can help designers get more work. We also hope to bring along some established designers who will be open to sharing their stories and offering advice during the evening.

There will be a range of free drinks and pizza for everyone to enjoy, just get there early if you want a slice!

The event is primarily for aspiring graphic designers who want more work in film, TV and live events, whether established or brand new to the industry. However, we also welcome producers, researchers and event planners who want to know more about the marketplace or source designers for your next project! We will also be inviting and welcoming graphic designers who are already working in the industry to share their story and offer some advice on how you can get work as a graphic design in film, TV and live events.

The Hacker Lab

Binary Exploitation Lab - Hosted by Max

The challenge teaches low-level exploitation techniques that are different to the standard stack-based buffer overflows that you will usually train on.

Active Directory Lab - Hosted by Jordan & Brandyn

This lab is a network of domain connected machines to showcase some of the typical exploits, privilege escalation techniques & lateral movement opportunities.

The private lab will be available, we now encourage all our members to sign up for an account on Hack The Box prior to the meetup and work through the challenges together.

There will be internet available via the hosts Wifi network.

You can register an account at the following URL:

https://www.hackthebox.eu/

Make sure your laptop is charged prior to the event, as there may not be many power points available.

About Us:

This is a group for hackers in the local area to meet, undertake bug bounties, Hack the Box, partake in our lab with various machines and of course have a beer or two.

We aim to provide a friendly environment to facilitate knowledge sharing, learning and making new connections with the Brighton hacking community.

If you are interested in the following this is the event for you:

- Bug Bounties
- Infosec career advice
- Capture the flag
- Ethical Hacking
- Programming
- Wifi Hacking

Please bring a laptop with your chosen hacking distro and please make sure it is charges as power points are limited.

Probably best if you tether to your mobile for internet and have a separate WiFi card (Alfa Network AWUS036ACH is a good option) for the lab if you want to partake but that is up to you.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Any questions email jdksec@outlook.com

Please note that the venue may change from time to time but we will update everything as and when it happens.

Thrive's Meetup for Female Founders and Women in Business

The Thrive Effect is social enterprise on a mission to give female founders the inspiration, knowledge and connections they need to start and grow a thriving small business. One of the ways we do this is via our monthly Meetups.

Each Thrive Meetup is two-hours long, during which there is a FEMALE FOUNDER-LED TALK followed by a PEER SUPPORT SESSION. All our talks are delivered by knowledgeable female founders who want to share their expertise and give practical tips for our Meetup attendees to put into practice within their own businesses. Our peer support sessions are an opportunity for attendees to discuss and explore potential solutions to their current business challenges, as well as gain feedback on any new ideas they have.

Attendees come from a range of industries, and are mainly in the first three years of running their own business or social enterprise. Female business support practitioners and professional service staff also attend to share their expertise and experience.

People leave our Thrive Meetups feeling inspired, informed and energised - ready to work on the next steps along their entrepreneurial journey.

Brighton Web Dev Meetup: The essential DevOps kitbag

"Why microservices fail. The essential DevOps kitbag"

By Steve Ross-Talbot

In this talk, Steve will examine some of the reasons why micro services deliver well early on and then fray at the edges and start to fail as we scale. The birth of micro services was arguably from observations that James Lewis made about how we deliver business value and at what granularity. Those observations have led to much faster CDCI pipelines into cloud native execution environments and blurred the distinction between production and pre-production environments. In looking at why micro services fail we shall mitigate the failure modes by the use of technology and the reshaping of organisational structures to ensure we can scale. Inevitably it leads to some of the essential tooling and processes that should be in the DevOps kitbag.

Bio
Steve Ross-Talbot is a professor of Distributed Computing at Kingston University in London. He is an Hon. Research Fellow at Napier University in Edinburgh. He is also an author of the SOA Manifesto and a former chair of all the Web Services standards in W3C. He is co-founder of the Zero Deviation Lifecycle (ZDLC) having been the CEO and CSO of the ZDLC Business Unit in Cognizant. Amongst his previous exploits are project Hoodini at Nomura, the founder of SpiritSoft and the first commercial Java Messaging System (JMS) and Complex Event Processing (CEP) systems, as well as speaking at conferences about distributed systems design and microservuces. Steve is currently a technology strategy consultant for many large international banking clients.

Doors open at the Skiff at 6:30pm and the presentation will start at 7pm.

We will be having half-time pizzas and beers/refreshments as usual.

We hope to see you there.
